Archaeologists in northern China's Hebei Province have discovered the remains of a Neolithic settlement dating back about 6,000 years, Xinhua reported on Oct. 16.

"A team of specialists from Hebei University of Education, together with colleagues from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology of Hebei Province, with the support of relevant government agencies, are excavating an area of about 300 square meters in Lincheng County," the agency said.

The archaeological excavations are expected to be completed by the end of October. In Nanbanshi Village, Lincheng County, where excavations were conducted, relics of bones, ceramics and stone tools were discovered, as well as the foundations of houses and human burials, including clay jars of young men who died before reaching adulthood. According to the locals' custom, these people were buried near houses or their remains were kept inside houses.

According to the spokesperson of the county authorities, an archaeological park is planned to be established at the excavation site. The ancient relics discovered are expected to provide a better understanding of the living conditions of people in that era. The discoveries are also expected to help historians study the details of cultural development and social changes in China's Neolithic period.
