A team of Chinese scientists has discovered an entirely new function for eyelashes. šŸ‘ļø

Although eyelashes are believed to only protect the eyes from dust and bright lights, a new study has shown their effective role in draining water.

Eyelashes have been considered, throughout the ages, one of the aesthetic features that humans have preserved, despite the general decline in body hair. However, the role of eyelashes in protecting the eyes from liquids, such as water and sweat, has not received much scientific attention until now.

In this regard, the team, led by Professor Jiang Li from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducted a detailed study on the properties of human eyelashes.

The scientists studied the interaction of eyelashes with water to analyze how water is drained, using artificial intelligence.

The eyelashes were found to be made of flexible, curved, water-resistant fibres, which enable them to naturally push water away from the eyes, whether during rain or swimming.

As a result, it was concluded that eyelashes protect the eyes from fluids, which helps maintain clear vision during various activities. The team also indicated that this discovery may pave the way for the design of artificial eyelashes that can perform the same aesthetic and functional role.

The research team stressed that although eyelashes can protect the eyes from some dirt, there are also preventive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of infection, such as washing hands before and after touching the eyes, cleaning glasses and avoiding sleeping with contact lenses.
