Does AI make us stupid?

Previously, assistant programs such as Excel were intended to simplify calculations, requiring a person to understand the formulas used and why they were used, while the Internet was used to search for information within a more specific framework. Today, neural networks have more flexible algorithms. As they develop, they may eventually be able to "take over" the thinking process, posing a direct threat to human cognitive abilities.

The impact of artificial intelligence on students' academic achievements is already noticeable. For example, studies have shown that students who use artificial intelligence have worse results in mathematics tests and exams than their classmates who do not use this technology.

When researchers from the University of Pennsylvania compared the performance of nearly 1,000 Turkish high school students in mathematics, they noticed that students who used ChatGPT had 17% worse results in the final exams, despite solving more problems correctly during preparation (an increase ranging from 48% to 127%), compared to students who relied on themselves.

These results raise questions about one of the main benefits that experts point to for artificial intelligence, which is specialized education and assistance in the academic environment. As the study authors said, neural networks act as "crutches" during learning, which requires caution when integrating them into the education process to ensure the acquisition of critical thinking skills.

Other studies conducted on Albanian students have shown that neural networks may hinder the development of the ability to solve problems independently, as students may rely excessively on these tools and are unable to face intellectual and professional challenges without relying on the "crutch of artificial intelligence." In addition, programs like ChatGPT may undermine students’ ability to grasp new areas of knowledge with a deep understanding of the underlying phenomena and processes that shape them. The result is superficial knowledge and a low level of expertise.
