Germany: More than a million people sign petition to ban fireworks in the country
More than a million people have signed a petition calling for a comprehensive ban on fireworks across Germany, after the violent explosions that occurred during New Year's celebrations.
The police union "GDP" in Berlin said that the number of people who supported the campaign to collect signatures launched by the union has reached more than 1.01 million people so far. The union described this petition on the X platform as a political assignment.
The text of the petition reads: "What we witnessed last New Year's Eve exceeds all limits. These violent attacks on our colleagues must end." The union said in the petition that it is calling for a ban on fireworks in private areas, considering this measure an important first step to enhance the safety of emergency teams on New Year's Eve.
However, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (both from the Social Democratic Party) have expressed their rejection of the idea of banning fireworks.
