The South China Morning Post revealed a strange and perhaps shocking health condition that a young Chinese man lived with for more than 20 years of his life, without knowing it.
The newspaper reported that a young man, 23 years old, known as "Xiaoma", who is a resident of the city of Xi'an in Shanxi Province, northern China, was suffering from constant sneezing and a runny nose, so he went to the hospital, where doctors discovered a dice that had been stuck in his nasal cavity for more than 20 years.
In the details of the news, the newspaper said that after several failed attempts to treat himself using traditional Chinese medicine, he went to seek medical help at Xi'an Gaoxin Hospital, where his condition was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, and a foreign body was identified in his nasal passage, according to the hospital's medical records.
Later, Dr. Yang Rong, an otolaryngologist at the hospital, conducted a nasal endoscopy examination that revealed a dice stuck in his nasal cavity.
During the endoscopy examination, we discovered a foreign body â a white mass covered with secretions. After removing it, it turned out to be a two-centimeter-long dice that had partially eroded from its long stay in the nasal cavity, where it had been lodged in the lower nasal passage, causing damage to the nasal mucosa,â Dr. Yang explained.
Xiaoma recalled that the dice may have accidentally entered his nose when he was three or four years old, although how it got there remains unclear.
However, the situation was dangerous because the dice had stuck to the surrounding tissue over the years, and any incorrect handling during the procedure could have caused it to fall into his airway, potentially causing him to suffocate.
Fortunately, the dice was successfully removed through surgery, ending its decades-long stay in Xiaoomaâs nose.
It is still unclear whether Xiao has suffered any long-term health effects or side effects from having the dice stuck in his nose for more than 20 years.
Dr Yang also stressed the importance of parents being vigilant when children play, saying: "Parents should be very careful about foreign objects in the nasal cavity; they may fall into the posterior nasal passage or airway, posing a life-threatening risk. Such cases require immediate emergency treatment."
The incident sparked a wave of comments on Chinese social media, with one user saying: "He is only 23 years old, and the dice has been stuck in his nose for 20 years? How big was his nostril when he was three? Honestly, it is amazing that he has been able to live with this situation for 20 years."
Another commented: "This is really scary, the dice has been eroded, just looking at the picture makes me feel uncomfortable."
While a third commented: âThis is a warning to parents, foreign bodies in the nose are not a joke; any abnormal symptoms should be dealt with immediately in the hospital!â
